Notes
It is still too early for much to be happening in the garden, but I can't help pulling away the mulch to see what might be growing.
I did cut back most of the sedums and roses last weekend, still have to do one major rose 'Knockout' and remove some of the weeker, crossing and dead canes from the others.
I'll also cut back the Rudbeckia today.
A quick check reveals the following:
All veronicas are putting out new growth - "Alba", "Sunny Border Blue" and "Red Fox"
All Sedums except "Purple Emperor"
Neon and Frosty Morn are very strong.
Caryopteris is growing lots of new leaves.
Gaura heaved, roots are out, covered them with mulch, now I am worried that it won't survive; well, it won't be the first time, they never live for me; yet I keep buying them every year.
Penstemon "Husker's Red" - there was new growth but it is frost damaged now, lots of new babies :)
The other Penstemon has new basal growth.
Salvia "Purple Rain" is growing.
"Black and Blue" is getting huge in the garage.
Roses:
"Gemini" - very weak growth - she is so finicky anyway
"Betty Prior" - good
"Candleabra" - wimpy - must be moved this year
All others except "Knock out" are dormant looking.
Irises popping up
Pussy Willows have catkins, surprisingly, the one in the shade garden is the strongest grower.
Lamiums are popping their heads up again.
"Spider wort" looking strong.
Just remembered yesterday, I need to find something low and colorful for the area around the lamppost up front, I had removed all the monkey grass from here and built up the soil with organic matter. Now it will be ready for planting. Hard to think of something low, colorful and evergreen; may have to do Petunias in the summer and Pansies in the winter? I don't like this idea though. Maybe look for some Dianthus.
I feel great - having accomplished a lot today.
I sowed all the perennial seeds - labeled them too :)
Here is the list:
Mexican hat coneflower
White Swan coneflower
Agastache Blue Spires
Coreopsis Sea Shells
Heliopsis Lorraine Sunshine
Now, I think I can order more seeds without feeling guilty.
I also repotted all the Begonia bulbs, watered them, hope they sprout again.
Took cuttings of the 'Black and Blue' , filled two pots.
I have brought those in, alongwith the two pots of 'Lantana' which are sprouting.
Then, I cut down the rest of the sedums, all the Rubeckia and , and, the one remaining 'Knock Out', it was already leafing out, so I felt I had caught them just in time.
I even cleaned up the potting area.
Now, I shall fix myself a latte and pick up the plant and seed catalogs :)
That was not all, I even took care of my indoor plants today. Watered , pruned, cleaned up all of them.
For someone who does not care for indoor plants, I sure have a lot of them.
